Fuente Osmeña Circle Lights up for Hope in 2021

The Fuente Osmeña Circle Tree of Hope lights up the night sky, ushering in the start of the Christmas season.

The iconic Fuente Osmeña Circle Tree of Hope was lit up at the start of December 2021, attracting many locals to its fascinating spectacle. As the year ends, it symbolizes an optimistic message for Cebuanos.

During the lighting ceremony on December 1, 2021, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama mentioned that the Christmas tree should be a sign of better days amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged the entire world for two years now.

The Christmas tree is a sight to behold when driving around the Fuente Osmeña Circle.

FUTURE EVENTS UNDER ALERT LEVEL 2

Cebu City was once the epicenter of COVID-19 in the Philippines, but many businesses and establishments are slowly opening their doors as the number of cases has been decreasing. The Alert Level was downgraded to 2, which means more businesses and establishments are allowed to operate at a certain capacity.

Businesses that have been closed for the past two years will finally see their operations return, and that might include events for celebrating the holidays. Indeed, Christmas in the Philippines wouldn’t be complete without families and friends gathering and having a feast.

The government has already begun planning for the annual Sinulog Festival this 2022. The parades and parties were canceled, while the dance presentations had to adapt to a digital platform because of the city’s pandemic situation.

It is arguably the biggest event in the city, welcoming hundreds, maybe even thousands, of visitors per year. It’s the time of the year when most travelers visit the city to experience this one of a kind spectacle.

TREE OF HOPE

The lighting ceremony is a much awaited event for many Cebuanos, and though only a few can enter the premises, many passersby took the time to witness the massive structure.

The tree is 100 feet tall and is made out of a steel base. It is surrounded by a bunch of Christmas lanterns, lights, and other ornaments that colorfully light up the night sky.

At the bottom of the tree, you’ll find a life-size diorama of the Nativity Scene, several mannequins wearing Sinulog attires, and the image of the Sto. Niño.

Below the tree is a diorama of the Nativity Scene, Sinulog mannequins, and the Sto. Niño, all commonly seen
during the advent season in the Philippines.

FUENTE

This is the 21st year of the Tree of Hope, and it used to be one of the best Cebu nightlife spots during Christmas time. There used to be food bazaars selling Filipino street food for families and barkadas to enjoy.

Unfortunately, the food bazaar and all the other events to be held in the area have foregone their operations because of the pandemic and to avoid big crowds.

In fact, the entire area around Fuente used to be one of the busiest places in the city because of their long strip of nightlife areas. It has popular cafes, restaurants, and clubs.

Although there are now some bars open in Cebu City, they still enforce social distancing and wearing of masks.

Hopefully, this area will go back to its busy atmosphere when things go back to normal.

Fuente is a Cebu nightlife spot that is frequented by many people because of the nearby tourist attractions.

HOW TO GET THERE

  • JEEP

The Fuente Osmeña Circle is one of the most popular areas in the city, and it has many jeepney routes that you can take. Hop on a jeepney that passes by Jones or Ramos and get dropped off at the nearest area from the rotunda. Fare will cost you around 10 to 20 Php.

  • TAXI

You can also take a taxi, especially since many drivers are very familiar with the area. If you are within the city, your fee will be around 100 to 200 Php, depending on traffic and your location. If you are staying in closer areas like Osmeña Boulevard or Jones Avenue, then it will be cheaper.

While the events that we usually expect every year during the advent season have been canceled due to the pandemic, we can expect massive changes if the pandemic doesn’t get worse. It all starts with the opening of tourist spots for travelers to experience the Queen City of the South and establishments opening their doors again to the public.

The Fuente Osmeña Circle celebrating its lighting ceremony shows that there is still hope for better days. Everyone is excited to celebrate despite being required to follow protocols for their own safety.

One might as well consider the Tree of Hope a symbol wherein we will eventually be able to experience Cebu’s beauty and wonder once more in the future.
