On May 4, 2020, the Department of Health-Central Visayas will conduct a rapid testing in the 3 major cities of Cebu Island. Approximately 46,000 residents will undergo a strategic testing in Cebu City, Mandaue City, and Lapu-Lapu City.
The areas will first be categorized as red zones (infected) and, depending on the results, will be changed to orange zones or green zones.
This is a method under Project Balik Buhay to ensure the safe transition from enhanced community quarantine to general community quarantine. According to the timeline, the transition should be done on May 21, 2020.
The number of cases is expected to rise once the testing begins, however, according to Cebu City councilor Raymond Garcia, there is no need for the public to panic unless the death toll also increases.
Kenneth Cobonpue, chairman of the Regional Development Council 7, said that rapid testing should be a prerequisite of priority companies upon returning to work.
Restarting the economy of Cebu Island and traveling to Cebu is a possibility once the ECQ will be lifted. The rapid testing is a measure to initiate the recovery of Cebu Island from the crisis.
