Cebu City is one of the cities in the province that is still under enhanced community quarantine. The ECQ is scheduled to be lifted on May 15, and a lot of Cebuanos have been anticipating this. This means that work will resume and the businesses will be opening their doors again. Lifting the ECQ is a sign of recovery.
However, Cebuanos will not be able to go back to their old normal lives right away. A proper transition is needed once the ECQ ends. Abrupt changes are discouraged, which is why a modified community quarantine will be implemented after the ECQ.
Mayor Edgardo Labella announced that in order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 when people start traveling to Cebu City again, social distancing and disinfection should still be practiced. There are no set guidelines for the modified community quarantine yet, but it is certain that wearing masks and the availability of dispensers with sanitizers in establishments will be included. Whatever the people are doing right now to fight against COVID-19 should still be observed once the ECQ is lifted.
According to Labella, “The modified quarantine is really to cushion the economic impact of the COVID-19 and allow businesses to operate. That does not mean everything will go back to normal.”
The mayor added, however, that if the number of cases should rise, another extension will be possible. That is why individuals in Cebu City are urged to continue doing preventive measures so that there will be no need for an ECQ extension. In fact, the whole Cebu province should be following the guidelines in fighting against COVID-19.
