Grace the mountains with ease as you explore our guide for hiking in Cebu.

With so many picturesque attractions on the island, it’s no surprise that hiking in Cebu has become quite popular.

Many hiking enthusiasts spend up to an entire day traversing the serene mountains and jungles either alone or with company. In fact, it’s become such a growing trend that a public Facebook group for hikers in Cebu has almost 50,000 members.

This energizing activity can test your endurance, stamina, and strength. While some advanced hiking trails can be a challenge for the average hiker, there are many beginner-friendly routes for those with less experience.

Hiking can also be therapeutic and a great coping mechanism for anyone facing their own silent battles. If you’ve ever tried it, long, peaceful walks can be good for serious conversations where you can be vulnerable and honest.

If you want to take part in this growing trend, here is a list of the various mountains in Cebu that you can explore. From natural to man-made hiking trails, this is the sort of expedition you can enjoy alone, with friends, or with fellow hikers.

SAFETY TIPS AND PREPARATION

  • Research and plan out the trip.

Before starting your hike, gather as much information as you can about the trail. This will give you an idea of the difficulty level, safety precautions, and if there are any fees for going on the trail.

This will prepare you for anything you might encounter along the way. Don’t hesitate to reach out for a helping hand either.

  • Hike with someone who is familiar with the trail.

Most recreational trekkers are familiar with the mountains in Cebu used for hiking. That being said, try to join local hiking groups. Some members may be used to navigating the trails easily by memory. That way, you won’t get lost during your hike.

  • Inform family and friends of your whereabouts.

Some trails are considered unfamiliar territory, so it’s best to be cautious in every journey. Inform someone you trust about your plans in case of an emergency.

Give them a time frame of when you are expected to come back and which trail you will be taking. Provide them with emergency contact information as well in case you don’t get home on time.

  • Always check the weather conditions.

Some hiking trails in Cebu are prone to landslides and floods, so it’s best to avoid hiking during the rainy season. Make sure to check the daily weather report before your hike.

Also, check the heat index as the scorching heat can make the experience uncomfortable. If the temperature is way too high, it may be best to opt out of hiking. If not, you can wear a cap, sunglasses, and light clothing. Make sure to bring sunscreen too.

EASY TRAILS FOR HIKING IN CEBU

  • Osmeña Peak

Despite being the highest mountain on the island, Osmeña Peak is one of the go-to beginner trails for hiking in Cebu. Why? Because the trail is so easy to navigate.

As you make your way up, you will find scenic views of the serene countryside, which also makes it great for camping. The area facing Tañon Strait, which is surrounded by the body of water separating Negros and Cebu, is a popular camping spot because of the view.

  • Sirao Peak

Sirao Peak is considered the best spot for trekking in Cebu for beginners. You can get there through two routes; one in Talamban, which lasts for five to six hours, and another in Busay, which only takes less than one.

Many hikers recommend Sirao Peak as a rookie’s first hiking trail since the path going there is well paved and less taxing. Some hikers have even confidently navigated the mountain without a guide.

  • “Coffee Shop Trails” in Banawa and Tisa

In recent years, new trails have emerged, and they have become part of popular hiking trends in Cebu. One of these is the interconnected coffee shop trails in the mountainous areas of Banawa and Tisa.

The most well-known spot is called Starbuk’s Rest Stop. They don’t serve coffee drinks as the name might suggest, but there is an overlooking deck with scenic views of the city. There are other cleverly named viewing decks along the way like Kofi Ben and Boss Kape.

UPPING THE ANTE: CHALLENGING ROUTES

  • Mount Manunggal

Mount Manunggal in Balamban has a significant history, as this is where former President Ramon Magsaysay died in a plane crash. A monument was erected to commemorate the tragedy.

Although it’s a popular hiking trail, it may be challenging for some.

Some hikers have pointed out the steep and rugged trail. The easier path is having to go through the dense forests, so you will definitely need a guide to get to the top of the mountain.

  • Mount Mauyog

Another popular hiking trail in Balamban is Mount Mauyog, which is considered one of the hardest treks on the island. Hikers have to pass through a steep and narrow trail leading to the famous brain-like rock formation at the summit.

Hiking to Mount Mauyog will definitely be a test of your upper body strength, since you need to have a firm grip on the rocks and boulders. The climb will be worth it when you reach the peak though, as it has one of the most beautiful views on the island.

  • Spartan Trail

The Spartan Trail takes its name from the rigorous training of Spartans before battle. This 2 hour and 2 minute trek is similar, as hikers have to pass through difficult terrain.

Some have recalled that the trail is muddy, which poses a challenge during a hike. Others say that there are mosquitoes along the trail, so make sure to bring insect repellent if you want to pursue the challenge.
