Explore the challenging terrain of the famous Spartan Trail.
What is the most popular hiking route in Cebu?
For experienced trail runners and adventure hikers, it’s definitely the Spartan Trail.
One of the most advanced hiking trails in the city, it’s known for its rigorous conditions and challenging terrain. Its name is inspired by the tedious training the Spartans underwent before going to battle.
The actual trail is 4.3 kilometers long according to AllTrails, spanning Banawa to Barangay Pamutan in Cebu City. It takes roughly two hours to finish without any stops or breaks in between.
However, most hikes can go even longer, lasting half the day, as participants struggle to pass the challenging obstacles like the uphill climbs, slippery slopes, and even the presence of dangerous wildlife.
With stunning views of the breathtaking skylines and the soothing ambiance of nature, hikers claim that the journey itself is worth it. It’s the perfect location away from the busy city life.
It’s a fixture for mountain hiking in Cebu, with users on AllTrails scoring it a 4.5.
Reviews highlight its diverse terrain and challenging obstacles, requiring a hiker’s maximum endurance.
So what is it like on the grueling Cebu Spartan Trail?
GETTING TO THE SPARTAN TRAIL
While AllTrails reviews collectively mention that the Spartan Trail has good markers and is quite easy to navigate, it is still recommended that you go with a group of people with a reasonable amount of experience.
Notably, the trail does not have either an entrance or an environmental fee.
The great thing about this trail is that there are barely any developed areas, making it great if you just want to be one with nature. You get to experience a peaceful and serene atmosphere, with an exciting journey to the top.
Like most of the hiking trails in Banawa, participants start at Paseo Arcenas. The main passageway to the trail is one of the more beginner-friendly hiking trails known as Starbuks.
From there, you can walk towards Bar Cramps, a scenic viewpoint where you will find a wooden sign bearing its name. This is the first part of the trail, which will already pose a challenge.
The slope is muddy and oftentimes extremely slippery, so make sure to wear hiking boots or sandals with good traction and stability.
The thick greenery is also full of prickly plants, so consider wearing long pants or socks. Make sure to wear insect repellent as well, as the trail is full of bugs and insects.
Take note that some hikers have reportedly encountered snakes like King Cobras at different areas of the trail.
They don’t show up in a common place, so be vigilant. Move away and don’t provoke them if you do see them.
Once you have made it past, you can go to the trail’s long winding river. The path is covered with massive rocks, so it can be similar to a mini rock climbing course.
Some parts will require you to walk over the rocks, while others require you to pull yourself up, where your upper body strength will be put to the test.
At the end of the river trek is one of the smallest waterfalls in Cebu. Right below it is a mini pool or jacuzzi, which is a great spot to take photos and cool off.
From there, you can proceed to the final ascent to Pamutan. You may feel relieved about finishing the trek, but you have one more obstacle to go through.
The path is quite rugged, with several broken trees blocking the way. You will have to climb over them to make it past the final part of the trek.
Once you have reached the sign that welcomes you to Barangay Pamutan, you have officially conquered the Cebu Spartan Trail. From there, you can take a motorcycle taxi back to Paseo Arcenas.
