Every SM mall says, “We’ve got it all for you.”
SM City Cebu‘s expansion project aims to live up to that slogan.
The revamp is mainly located in the mall’s Northwing section, which will eventually be called the North Wing Block. The entire project is expected to be completed this year.
Redevelopment was reported as early as 2022 by Sunstar. After the necessary permits were granted, work began around August of the same year. (2022)
This major renovation is a response to evolving consumer preferences and changes in the retail industry. For SM, meeting both means upgrading their malls’ amenities and features.
That being said, what’s new in SM’s first Cebu mall? Here’s what people can look forward to.
NEW OFFICES
Two new 16-story towers will rise within the area. These will house numerous offices for BPO companies, which are major contributors to Cebu City’s employment numbers.
The first five floors will be allotted for parking spaces, while the sixth to 20th levels will house workspaces.
MODERN CHAPEL
Nowadays, malls have chapels to let people fulfill their religious obligations without traveling far.
SM City Cebu usually holds regular Sunday masses every 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Northwing Atrium.
However, with this expansion, SM Malls seized the opportunity to create a dedicated space for holy obligations.
According to Estudio Arkipelago (the architecture firm commissioned to design the chapel), the space will draw inspiration from Noah’s Ark, featuring wooden ceilings, light cement walls, and stone flooring.
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY – CEBU
National University will soon open its doors to Cebuano students with its brand new campus.
The nonsectarian university will rise above the mall’s new parking area, occupying the sixth to ninth floors. The campus will also have a roof deck, giving students and faculty a space to relax.
MANAM COMFORT FILIPINO
Another one of Manila’s favorites is arriving on Cebuano shores.
Manam is the brainchild of Moment Group founders Abba Napa, Eliza Antonino, and Jon Syjuco. It’s an homage to their childhood memories and culinary exploits.
It specializes in Filipino classics, but each dish has an original twist unique to the restaurant.
House crispy sisig is Manam’s signature dish. It doesn’t stray too far from the original concept, but the restaurant puts its own spin on it by making it crispy, creating contrasting textures.
Other must-tries include Crispy Pancit Palabok and Sinigang na Beef Short Rib with Watermelon.
DIN TAI FUNG
This global favorite and five-time Michelin Star recipient is heading to the Queen City of the South.
Cebuanos can finally taste their world-famous xiao long bao without flying to another city. Don’t skip their other items like salted egg yolk prawns (a Philippine exclusive) and dan dan noodles with sesame and peanut sauce.
WOLFGANG’S STEAKHOUSE
Cebu steakhouses will gain a great addition with the entry of Wolfgang’s.
The SM City Cebu branch is their second branch on the island, so expect the same quality of cuts and chops.
Their signature Porterhouse is said to be the best among the country’s steakhouses, so why not give that a try?
8CUTS BURGERS
Burger lovers, rejoice! 8Cuts’ take on the beloved American classic has been a hit with diners up north.
Now that they’re headed southside, Cebuanos can taste favorites like cheeseburgers and Oh-Rings (their version of onion rings).
If you want signatures, try their Four Cheese 2.0 or Burger Bomb.
ABACA BAKING COMPANY
Most Cebuanos know this baking powerhouse. ABC has been serving people delicious pastries since 2006.
It just opened its 16th branch in SM City Cebu’s Northwing section, with a bigger space than its Northwing Atrium kiosk during its initial launch.
Aside from their baked goods, we also recommend their Winner Winner Chicken Dinner—their take on chicken waffles.
