Continental breakfast is a fan-favorite around the world. It’s a light meal consisting of pastries and coffee, inspired by how European countries like France, Spain, and the Mediterranean enjoy their breakfast.
In Cebu, most hotels have buffets serving the best breakfast pastries aside from their meals. However, most Cebuanos might gravitate towards one name in particular for some early morning tea and coffee: Abaca Baking Company!
This popular brunch restaurant sells high-quality freshly baked breads and desserts. It is one of the most ubiquitous companies in Cebu, with kiosks, coffee shops, and even buffets found in notable business districts, malls, and hotels.
The restaurant is proudly run by a passionate group of chefs, all working under the same mantra: “Don’t serve sh*t.”
MADE IN MACTAN
Abaca Baking Company is part of the Abaca Group, one of the most successful culinary chains in Cebu. It was first established in 2006 by Jason Hyatt, a former executive chef at the Lan Kwai Fong Group based in Hong Kong.
According to a spot.ph article, the group started with the Abaca Restaurant at the Abaca Boutique Hotel in Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City. (2020) Its bestsellers include flatbread pizzas and steaks.
It soon became a must-try restaurant in Cebu.
Later on, the group opened several homegrown concepts like A Cafe, an all-day breakfast buffet at The Crossroads in Banilad. This was later converted to what we now know as the Abaca Baking Company.
Each of their products are handcrafted early in the morning to ensure the best quality. Additionally, most branches offer a 50 to 70% discount in the evening in order to make way for fresher products the next day.
The group opened more homegrown stores such as Maya, Phat Pho, and Red Lizard.
Notably, Maya, a Mexican restaurant, is said to have the biggest tequila collection in the Philippines.
In 2019, the group partnered with Ascott, who opened the Citadines Hotel at the Base Line Residences, where they have a special branch of the cafe. The Abaca Baseline branch is one of the only branches in Cebu with a breakfast buffet.
During the pandemic, they unveiled Abaca Eats, a “virtual food hall” which allows customers to skip lines and have their food delivered.
Today, Abaca products purchased through Abaca Eats can be picked up at the Skyrise 2 Building at Cebu IT Park, and deliveries are only available through Grab Food.
