Most people visit Oslob to witness the magnificent whale sharks, often skipping other well-known attractions in the area.

But did you know that it is the closest town to one of the country’s best hidden gems and ecotourism sites? With fine white sands and crystal clear waters, Sumilon Island is a natural paradise that every tourist should add to their Cebu travel itinerary.

Spanning 24 hectares, Sumilon is accessible via a 15-minute boat ride from mainland Cebu. Most locals consider the island a must-visit whenever in Oslob.

Primarily popular for its sandbars, snorkeling sites, and historical landmarks, each location is within walking distance of each other.

The island’s name is derived from the Bisaya word “sumilong”, which means to take refuge or cover. Historically, the town served as a shelter for fishermen at sea during storms.

Its history highlights its importance in ecotourism, being the first underwater protected area in the country. Its location is also known for the townspeople’s victories against pirates.

HISTORY OF SUMILON ISLAND

In the 19th century, Augustinian priest Julian Bermejo formulated an extensive defense system to counter frequent Moro raids on churches in the southern part of Cebu.

He installed massive watchtowers facing the sea, allowing them to watch out for any incoming attacks and retaliate. The system was put to the test one morning in 1813.

Seven Moro vessels attempted to dock and raid the nearby town of Boljoon, but the locals were able to successfully intercept them. A fleet of armed Cebuanos was then deployed to attack the incoming invaders.

As the Moros fled, the Cebuanos caught up to them on Sumilon Island, where an immense battle commenced. The Cebuanos were fortunately successful as they outnumbered the pirates.

This would be the last time Moro marauders would attempt to loot Cebu since it later expanded its defense system to the nearby towns of Iloilo and Bohol.

The watchtower soon became a heritage site in Oslob, with a statue of Bermejo built right in front of it.

Tourists and locals from mainland Cebu later discovered the island’s natural beauty and rich aquatic life. It was declared a fish sanctuary in 1974 by Silliman University, becoming the country’s first marine reserve.

The local government has tirelessly protected the marine sanctuary where dozens of fish and corals live. Communities and conservation organizations perform consistent clean-up activities to preserve the natural beauty of many of its tourist locations as well.
