This is your sign to start jogging at the CCLEX.

Would you like to go for a run along the longest bridge in the Philippines?

Since the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway or CCLEX opened its pedestrian lanes, fitness junkies have turned this massive structure into a jogging route.

The one-way route spans 9 kilometers, starting from Cebu South Road Properties (SRP) to the town of Cordova, standing at an altitude of around 145 meters high.

The CCLEX is a notable jogging area in Cebu because of the picturesque view, which adds to the ambiance when you’re out for an early morning run.

The bridge itself is considered an attraction, with tourists and locals flocking to the site to take photos and admire the view.

Running events have become a fast growing trend around the world, and it probably won’t be long until we see a lot of morning joggers along the CCLEX.

PREPARATION

The pedestrian and bike lanes are open from 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM, so it’s best to start as early as you can to avoid the intense heat during the day.

If you’re coming from Cebu City, you can access the pedestrian lane through the blue walkway along the U-turn slot at SRP, which is a few meters away from SM Seaside Cebu.

There is no entrance fee, but you will have to register when you get to the starting point.

Most runners will start their run from this side of the bridge, but you can also start from the Cordova side by passing through the toll gate.

Only a few parking spaces are available, so it may be better to take public transportation on your way to the starting point.

If you insist on bringing a private vehicle, you can park at IL Corso since they provide open parking early in the morning.

WHAT IS RUNNING AT THE CCLEX LIKE?

A Sunstar Cebu article (2024) shares that jogging at the CCLEX takes a bit longer than a typical short run (5 kilometers). Beginners may see this as a long-distance option, while experienced runners may treat it as a mid-range run.

It is advised that you build up your stamina and muscle endurance before you consider going for a run through the bridge. You can start out on a weekly basis before making the CCLEX bridge a part of your regular route for jogging.

Again, this is a one-way route. Once you get started, you can’t turn back. The U-turn slot can be found at the end of the bridge.

Take note that there are no restrooms available at the bridge. Also, it’s best to bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated. Just make sure you’re not drinking too much along the way to avoid having to go to the bathroom before getting to the end of the bridge.

The Sunstar article advises joggers to bring around 16 to 32 ounces of water, but you can add more if you think you’ll need it. A lightweight water bottle would be best to bring on your run.

Also, don’t forget to warm up beforehand.

A one-way run along the bridge can last for about over an hour. You can also walk if you want to, but this will last around two to three hours depending on your speed.

Some prefer walking not just because it is less exhausting, but also because they enjoy taking photos of the view and the massive structure.

At the end of the bridge, you can recharge with some buko juice or puto sikwate, which you can purchase from local vendors. When you’re done with your run, you can take a van at the Cordova terminal that will bring you back to Cebu City.

GUIDELINES FOR THE PEDESTRIAN LANE

The CCLEX Facebook page released guidelines on the use of pedestrian lanes on May 31, 2023. This is to ensure the safety of pedestrians, preserve the structure, and maintain an enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • No leaning on the barriers

The railings serve as a safety precaution, but some pedestrians might climb over them to get a better vantage point for photos

As a result, crossing, leaning, climbing, and sitting on the barriers are prohibited.

  • Wear proper attire

Management emphasized wearing appropriate jogging attire when going for a run.

Aim for fitness clothes that are comfortable enough for the long run. Invest in good running shoes as well.

  • No small-wheeled devices

Bicycles are the only vehicles allowed on the lanes, while skateboards, roller skates, and scooters are prohibited.

They are considered too lightweight and may be difficult to maneuver because of the strong winds at the given altitude. Subsequently, pedestrians are not allowed on the main road.

  • No U-turns

As mentioned, both lanes are one-way routes, and you can only turn back at the designated U-turn slot, which is at the end of the bridge.

The lanes are too narrow, and going back the other way will obstruct the path of other joggers. This is why it is important to assess whether you can take the distance of the bridge or not.

  • No umbrellas

When jogging at the CCLEX, it’s best that you are as compact as possible. The management prohibits the use of umbrellas, as these can possibly reach the main road.

To combat the scorching heat, you can wear a cap and sunglasses. Also, never forget to put on sunscreen, especially if you anticipate jogging or walking beyond 6:00 AM.

  • No vandalism

The CCLEX is indeed a beautiful structure that both locals and tourists are encouraged to help preserve its cleanliness. Management has emphasized the importance of keeping the bridge intact by enforcing the prohibition of vandalism.

Vandalism is considered a crime in the Philippines, with culprits having to pay for the items needed for restoration, including a Php 5,000 fee for the first offense, Php 8,000 for the second, and Php 10,000 and imprisonment for the third.

As the newest fitness trend in Cebu, jogging at the CCLEX can be one of the most exciting outdoor activities worth trying out. Again, make sure to assess whether you are capable of finishing the run if you want to pursue it.

With the aforementioned guidelines in place, you’ll know what to expect when you get to the CCLEX bridge.

If you’re into running or jogging, this can be a worthwhile challenge to add to your bucket list. Even for those who want to get into running, this may be an ambitious goal to pursue in the near future.

What do you think?

Do you have what it takes to conquer the country’s longest bridge?
