But did you know that Bantayan Island’s history is rooted in this resort?
“Kota” is a native term for a watchtower or fortress.
According to history in the Municipality of Madridejos, Bantayan Island was regularly raided by Moro pirates during the Spanish colonial era, especially from the 18th to the 19th centuries.
Along the Visayas coastlines, especially Bantayan Island, watchtowers and fortifications were erected to shield the locals from these destructive invasions. (2025)
Locally referred to as “kota,” these structures were crucial defense and lookout posts.
Because of the ancient fort that is located close to the resort, it was given the name “Kota Beach Resort.” The name alludes to the island’s rich and tumultuous past, when villages depended on these “kotas” for protection.
The word “kota” is a reminder of this important aspect of Bantayan Island’s history, even though the original forts may now be in ruins or have been repurposed (for example, Kota Park in Madridejos, which contains the remains of an old Spanish fort).

HOW TO GO TO BANTAYAN ISLAND FROM CEBU CITY
To reach Bantayan Island from Cebu City, you must first go to Hagnaya Port and then board a ferry to Bantayan Island’s Santa Fe Port.
Getting to Hagnaya Port via bus or van from Cebu City’s North Bus Terminal and then catching a ferry to Santa Fe is the most popular route.
You can also look for direct flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Bantayan Airport if you prefer a faster option.
