WHAT MAKES LUMPIA NI SENYANG UNIQUE
Lumpia ni Senyang is run and owned by Gertrudes “Senyang” Tendon. Many know her for her outgoing personality, happily chatting and taking photos with her customers.
She is admired for her dedication to making every customer feel welcome, never shying away from a conversation. Her boundless hospitality will make you feel right at home: a key factor in this neighborhood eatery’s longevity.
Her lumpia recipe was first introduced in the 70s, and according to avid eaters (especially former SACS students), its taste has remained consistent throughout the years.
Rather than the typical meat-filled lumpia shanghai, the spring rolls at Senyang’s use vegetable fillings, particularly with sprouted mung beans locally called togue.
According to an article from Bon Appétit, sprouted mung beans have a mild taste that is a little nutty and earthy. It is often compared to baked potatoes, creating a rather versatile taste. (2023)
Senyang’s lumpia is hefty. A few bites in and you will already start feeling full. These are best paired with a few pieces of puso and a generous dollop of their signature hot sauce.
The sauce is what many say gives Lumpia ni Senyang its distinct flavor. It has a hint of sweetness that perfectly balances its spice. But some customers have mentioned that it can get too spicy.
To help with this, Senyang’s offers its own signature coconut juice. Cold and smooth, it’s a great drink to replenish and hydrate. Plus, it has several health benefits.
An article on PharmEasy enumerates several coconut drink benefits, such as reducing fatigue and stress, aiding in diabetes and weight loss, relieving digestive issues, and reducing high blood pressure, just to name a few. (2025)
A meal at Senyang’s won’t cost you much either. As of writing, one piece of their lumpia costs Php 25.
For Php 100, you can already enjoy a satisfying meal with one of Cebu’s best spring rolls.
Nearly 50 years have passed and Lumpia ni Senyang has kept its simple, no frills aesthetic, all while continuously gaining more customers every day.
But why is it so popular?
Is it the flavor?
Senyang’s enthusiasm and charm?
Either way, it has become a beloved karenderia on Mactan Island, thanks to their tasty vegetable lumpia recipe.
